Deafness is the third most common disability in the world! 1 in 6 people in the UK are affected by hearing loss (about 10 million people) and around 100,000 people use sign language as their first language.
9 in every ten deaf children are born to hearing parents, but only 1 in 10 of those parents will learn sign language to be able to communicate fully with their son or daughter.
For deaf people with limited hearing or lip-reading skills, speaking clearly will help them.
As Deaf Awareness Week starts May 15th we want to promote our work with deaf people and share some tips to help you to communicate with a deaf person effectively.
You may think that most of these things are obvious, but in conversation we do it all the time!! Be prepared to laugh… :D
