At Deaf Umbrella, we believe in supporting initiatives that make a real difference. That’s why we are proud to share the inspiring journey of Rachael Brown, who is taking on the challenge of running the 45th anniversary London Marathon in April 2025 to raise funds for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
Rachael’s story is one of resilience and determination. In January 2023, she experienced sudden and complete hearing loss, a life-altering moment that left her feeling isolated and unsure about navigating the world. Like many in similar situations, she faced the challenges of adapting to a silent world—missing doorbells, alarms, and everyday interactions that many take for granted.
But through this challenge, Rachael found purpose. She is now lacing up her running shoes and taking on one of the world’s most famous marathons to support a cause close to her heart: Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
This remarkable charity trains hearing dogs to provide essential sound support, alerting their partners to critical sounds such as alarms, doorbells, and even timers. More than that, these dogs offer companionship, emotional support, and help deaf individuals regain confidence in their daily lives.
Why Your Support Matters
It takes around £40,000 to train and care for just one hearing dog throughout their lifetime, ensuring they are fully equipped to provide life-changing assistance. Every donation, no matter the size, contributes towards this incredible mission. For example, £30 covers the cost of the distinctive burgundy jacket that hearing dogs wear when supporting their partners in public.
Rachael has already raised an incredible £1,637 towards her £2,000 target with the support of 76 generous donors. But she needs your help to reach her goal and make an even greater impact! By supporting her fundraising efforts, you are directly helping Hearing Dogs for Deaf People continue their vital work, providing independence and companionship to deaf individuals across the UK.
